Max Verstappen Begins Sao Paulo Grand Prix from Pit Lane After Power Unit Change

Max Verstappen will commence the Sao Paulo Grand Prix from the pit lane. This decision follows significant modifications to his vehicle after a lackluster performance during Qualifying. Verstappen experienced major setbacks in Q1 at Interlagos, where he reported having “no grip” and needing to “massively under-drive” his car.

Changes to Verstappen’s Car

Starting from P16 on the grid, Red Bull Racing decided to equip Verstappen’s RB21 with a new Honda power unit. In addition, several adjustments were made to the car’s setup under Parc Ferme conditions. Consequently, Verstappen’s starting position has shifted to the pit lane for the race.

New Power Unit Components

On Sunday morning, the FIA confirmed multiple enhancements to Verstappen’s car:

  • New Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)
  • New Turbocharger (TC)
  • New Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H)
  • New Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K)
  • New Energy Store (ES)
  • New Control Electronics (CE)
  • New Exhaust System (EX) without exceeding limits

Regulatory Implications

These modifications have surpassed his season allocations in several components. The FIA addressed these changes in a pre-race communication, emphasizing that the alterations to the power unit and setup did not receive approval from the FIA Technical Delegate. As a result, both Verstappen and Esteban Ocon are mandated to start from the pit lane under Article 40.9 a) of the 2025 Formula One Sporting Regulations.

The Challenge Ahead

Verstappen now faces a formidable challenge in the race as he aims to stay competitive in the championship. Last year, he made a remarkable comeback from P17 to clinch victory in severe rain conditions. His current position places him at a significant disadvantage as he embarks on this weekend’s race.
