Cody Johnson Debuts Studio Version of ‘Travelin’ Soldier,’ Achieves Viral Success
Cody Johnson has debuted his official version of “Travelin’ Soldier,” a song that has resonated deeply with fans over the years. This release comes five years after he first performed the track during a livestream event, and three years following his acoustic rendition of the song.
Cody Johnson’s Journey with “Travelin’ Soldier”
In a recent video shared on Instagram, Johnson reflected on the powerful connection fans have to this poignant song. “We recorded this song in 2020 on a livestream during COVID, and then it kind of went viral,” he explained.
Fans have consistently requested “Travelin’ Soldier” at his concerts and meet-and-greets. Johnson noted, “I’ve traveled all over the world, and there are signs in the crowd that say, ‘Play “Travelin’ Soldier.”’” He felt compelled to record the track officially after receiving such enthusiastic support.
History of “Travelin’ Soldier”
Originally penned and recorded by Bruce Robison in 1996, “Travelin’ Soldier” has a rich history. Ty England also included it in his 1999 album “Highways & Dance Halls.” However, it was The Chicks’ version that achieved major success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2003.
Unfortunately, this success was short-lived. Following a controversial comment by lead singer Natalie Maines regarding President George W. Bush, country radio stations quickly removed “Travelin’ Soldier” from their playlists. Just two weeks later, the song fell out of the top 40 on Billboard’s charts.
Continued Legacy and Upcoming Release
- Cody Johnson’s rendition is being released just before Veterans Day, honoring those who serve.
- Johnson’s current single, “The Fall,” is also climbing the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
Johnson expressed his gratitude to fans by stating, “This is just because we love you guys and figured we’d give you what you want.” His new release highlights his commitment to connecting with his audience through meaningful music.
Listeners can now experience Johnson’s studio version of “Travelin’ Soldier,” which captures the heartfelt essence of the song. This latest rendition reinforces the song’s lasting impact as a beloved favorite in modern country music.
