Inspection of Swiss Trains for Asbestos Contamination
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is set to inspect over 400 older trains for asbestos contamination dating back to their construction before 1990. During this era, the use of asbestos was still permitted in Switzerland.
- SBB will collect several thousand samples between 2026 and 2030.
- The inspection costs are estimated at 1.4 million Swiss francs.
- A detailed decontamination and disposal plan will follow, budgeted at 3.5 million francs.

Visa Regulations Eased for River Cruise Tourism
In a move to boost river cruise tourism, the Swiss government has relaxed visa regulations for crew members from third countries. This decision comes after authorities in Basel identified violations regarding valid work permits for workers from nations like the Philippines and Indonesia.
Previously, these crew members were required to work in Switzerland for at least ten days to qualify for a work permit, a condition that many cruise ship employees could not meet. Daniel Buchmüller from the Association of European River Cruise Operators expressed optimism, stating that the changes would likely increase the number of river cruise ships arriving in Basel next year.
National Vaccination Week Kicks Off
This week marks Switzerland’s inaugural National Vaccination Week, which runs from November 10th to November 15th. This initiative replaces the National Flu Vaccination Day.
During this week, individuals can receive vaccinations and advice for influenza, Covid, and sometimes RSV at participating doctors’ offices and pharmacies. This effort aims to enhance public health awareness and vaccination rates across the nation.
