HBO Max Develops ‘DC Crime’ Series from ‘American Vandal’ Creators
HBO Max, in collaboration with DC Studios, is developing an exciting new project titled “DC Crime.” This series will blend the true crime documentary format with characters from the DC Universe. It is set to be hosted by Jimmy Olsen, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo.
Focus on Gorilla Grodd
The inaugural season of “DC Crime” will center on the notorious DC villain Gorilla Grodd. Known for his confrontations with The Flash, Grodd is a highly intelligent gorilla who possesses psychic powers. This character, first introduced in DC Comics in 1959, has appeared in various animated series and the CW’s “Arrow-verse,” particularly in “The Flash.”
Creative Team Behind the Series
- Writers and Showrunners: Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, well-versed in satire and mockumentary, will lead the creative direction.
- Executive Producers: James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC Studios will also serve as executive producers, ensuring alignment with the broader DC narrative.
- Production Oversight: Galen Vaisman from DC Studios will supervise production, with Warner Bros. Television handling studio responsibilities.
A Proven Track Record
Yacenda and Perrault are notable for their work on the acclaimed Netflix series “American Vandal,” which humorously parodied true crime documentaries. They have also created the Paramount+ series “Players,” set in the eSports domain, and have experience with other projects that spoof sports culture.
Future of DC Programming
Under the guidance of Gunn and Safran, DC Studios is building an interconnected universe that includes television projects. Upcoming shows include “Lanterns,” featuring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. This series is anticipated to premiere in early 2026.
Currently, there is no confirmed premiere date for “DC Crime,” nor have HBO Max and DC Studios provided detailed comments on the project. Additionally, a “V for Vendetta” series is reportedly in development.
