Dan Quinn Assumes Defensive Play-Calling Duties from Joe Whitt Jr.

In a pivotal move following a disappointing stretch of defensive performances, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is taking over defensive play-calling duties from Joe Whitt Jr. This announcement was made during a press conference held on Monday.

Quinn Takes Over Defensive Play-Calling

Quinn acknowledged the team’s struggles, particularly after a heavy loss to the Detroit Lions, where the Commanders allowed 546 total yards and 44 points. Currently, Washington ranks 29th in points allowed and 30th in yards allowed this season. The team has also permitted the second-most passing yards in the league, totaling 2,602 yards, while sitting at 23rd against the run.

Reasons for the Change

Quinn stated, “When something’s not working, we shift from the question of, ‘Why isn’t it working?’ to ‘What do we need to do to get it right?’” He emphasized the need for changes in the defense, taking on the role of defensive coordinator himself.

While Joe Whitt Jr. will remain part of the coaching staff, assisting Quinn, he will also assume responsibilities from the press box on game days. Quinn expressed confidence in their collaborative history, having previously worked together at the Dallas Cowboys from 2021 to 2023 and during Quinn’s final year as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in 2020.

Looking Ahead

Quinn highlighted the importance of team cohesion, stating, “Joe will be involved all week, obviously with the rest of the staff, in planning and getting ready for the game.” Their mutual experience is expected to facilitate a smoother transition as they aim to revamp Washington’s defensive strategies effectively.

  • Washington Commanders Defensive Rankings:
  • 29th in points allowed
  • 30th in yards allowed
  • 2,602 passing yards allowed (2nd most in the league)
  • 23rd against the run

Dan Quinn’s decisive change in defensive strategy reflects the urgent need for improvement within the Commanders. The coaching staff, led by Quinn and supported by Whitt, is determined to rectify the defense’s alarming statistics as they move forward in the season.
