Steelers Activate Howard Amid Roster Changes

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made significant roster changes, including activating quarterback Will Howard from the Reserve/Injured List. In addition, cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. has been signed to the practice squad.

Will Howard’s Activation

Howard’s return to the active roster comes after a stint on the Reserve/Injured List due to a hand injury he sustained during training camp. He was placed on that list on August 28 and has missed all of the preseason.

Returning to practice on October 22, Howard expressed his enthusiasm to be on the field again. He mentioned that it felt like rediscovering the joy of playing football, recalling a moment when he smiled during his first two handoffs in practice.

“It’s been a long time. I’m just happy to be out there doing what I love,” Howard said. He emphasized the importance of taking advantage of every training opportunity, especially against the first-team defense.

College Career Highlights

Howard was drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, being the 185th overall pick after a standout season at Ohio State. He played one season for the Buckeyes, achieving remarkable statistics. In 50 college games, he completed 767 passes out of 1,202 attempts, accumulating 9,796 yards, 83 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

  • Started all 16 games for Ohio State
  • Led the team to a school record of 14 wins
  • Won the College Football Playoff National Championship
  • Holds Ohio State records for completion percentage and multiple high-efficiency games

Asante Samuel Jr. Joins the Practice Squad

In another key roster adjustment, the Steelers have signed cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to their practice squad. Samuel, a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, previously played for the Los Angeles Chargers for four seasons, starting 47 of the 50 games he participated in.

During his time with the Chargers, he recorded six interceptions and 37 passes defended, though he struggled with injuries in 2024, limiting his appearances to just four games.

Samuel’s Background

A standout at Florida State, Samuel played 32 games in college, recording 96 tackles, four interceptions, and multiple defensive statistics. Notably, he is the son of All-Pro cornerback Asante Samuel, a two-time Super Bowl champion.

Roster Moves and Implications

As part of the restructuring, the Steelers waived running back Trey Sermon and released defensive back Darrick Forest from the practice squad. These changes reflect the team’s strategy to optimize their roster as the season progresses.

With Howard back in practice and Samuel joining the team, the Steelers are looking to strengthen their lineup and improve their standings moving forward. Every training opportunity will be crucial for both players as they aim to contribute significantly in upcoming games.
