Yankees Eager to Retain Bellinger, Says Cashman
As the offseason begins, the New York Yankees are prioritizing the retention of outfielder Cody Bellinger. General manager Brian Cashman expressed the team’s eagerness to bring back the star player during a recent video call from the general manager meetings in Las Vegas. This event marked the unofficial start of the hot stove season, where teams and agents begin discussions on potential trades and free agent signings.
Yankees’ Interest in Bellinger
The Yankees acquired Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs last December, following the loss of Juan Soto to the New York Mets. Despite the change in plans, Bellinger proved to be an impactful addition, and Cashman confirmed the team’s commitment to re-sign him. “We’re very interested in bringing him back,” Cashman stated.
Bellinger’s Performance
In the 2025 season, Bellinger showcased impressive statistics. He played 152 games, batting .272 with 29 home runs and an OPS of .813. His stellar offensive performance included leading all left-handed hitters with a .415 on-base percentage and a .601 slugging percentage against lefties.
Defensive Contributions
- Strong defender at corner outfield spots
- Limited time at first base
- Slightly below average in center field
Additionally, Bellinger showcased speed on the bases, successfully stealing 13 bases in 15 attempts. His all-around success contributed to a wins above replacement (WAR) figure of 4.9, tying him for 18th in the majors.
Free Agency Outlook
Following the season, Bellinger opted out of the final year of his three-year, $80 million contract, initially signed with the Cubs. His decision to opt-out came as he was set to earn $25 million in 2026. His agent, Scott Boras, emphasized the positive fit between Bellinger and the Yankees. “It was really an ideal fit,” Boras commented.
Alongside Bellinger, another key outfielder, Trent Grisham, has until Tuesday to decide on a one-year, $22.025 million qualifying offer. Grisham’s breakout performance, which included a career-high 34 home runs, makes him a desirable asset in free agency.
Future Prospects
Cashman indicated that the Yankees’ pursuit of Bellinger will not be hindered by Grisham’s decision, suggesting the team may aim to secure both. The Yankees are intent on making significant moves to improve a team that won 94 games in the previous season but fell short in the playoffs.
“We’d be better served if we could retain him,” Cashman added, reiterating the team’s focus on Bellinger as viable options unfold in the coming months.
