Brian Schottenheimer: Marshawn Kneeland Inspires Our Forward Progress
The Dallas Cowboys are facing a challenging period following the tragic death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland. The team returned to The Star this week heavy-hearted, as they navigated their grief while preparing for upcoming games.
Private Vigil for Marshawn Kneeland
On Tuesday night, the Cowboys held a private candlelight vigil at the Ford Center. Owner Jerry Jones, Coach Brian Schottenheimer, and Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, delivered heartfelt eulogies. Coach Schottenheimer, speaking to the media on Wednesday, shared that Mancera is pregnant, adding a layer of complexity to the team’s mourning.
A Time of Mourning and Support
Kneeland passed away tragically last Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit and an accident. In response to the devastating news, the Cowboys conducted a virtual team meeting on Friday, as many players and staff were away during the off week. Upon returning to The Star on Monday, the team reconvened to support each other.
Throughout the week, grief specialists have been on hand to assist players and staff. Early Tuesday morning, a “brotherhood breakfast” allowed teammates to share their experiences and support one another. Coach Schottenheimer highlighted the emotional challenges faced by the team.
Embracing Team Unity
As they prepare for their Monday night game against the Raiders, the Cowboys will practice for the first time without Kneeland. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of team unity during this trying time. “One side of the ball is not playing well; the other side must step up,” he noted.
- Team members have been actively lifting each other up.
- Schottenheimer has expressed his own feelings of loss while finding strength in teammates.
Honoring Kneeland’s Memory
In tribute to Kneeland, the Cowboys are implementing various ways to honor him, including a special helmet decal. Furthermore, they have established the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund for Mancera and her unborn child.
“We want to ensure that she and the baby are taken care of for the rest of their lives,” Schottenheimer remarked. This commitment reflects the deep sense of family that the Cowboys embody as they navigate this hardship together.
