Yorkshire Maintains Water Restrictions Despite Increased Rainfall
Despite a recent increase in rainfall, Yorkshire maintains water restrictions due to ongoing drought conditions. Reservoir levels in the region have risen to 65.3%, up from 60.6% the previous week. However, this is not enough to lift the current hosepipe ban impacting over five million households.
Current Water Situation in Yorkshire
Yorkshire Water has reported that the increase in reservoir levels is not sufficient to warrant the removal of hosepipe restrictions. These restrictions have been in place since July and prohibit activities such as:
- Watering gardens
- Washing cars
- Cleaning windows
Reasons for Continued Restrictions
Mr. Kaye from Yorkshire Water stated that reservoir levels are anticipated to remain below average for several months. This prediction is based on the prolonged dry and hot weather experienced in the first half of the year.
Mr. Kaye emphasized the need for sufficient recovery across all reservoirs before lifting the hosepipe ban. He mentioned, “Until we have sufficient recovery across all reservoirs, the hosepipe restrictions will remain in place.”
Groundwater Levels
In addition to reservoir levels, groundwater levels in the Hull aquifer are a concern. Current measurements show that groundwater levels are at 38.2%, lower than typical for this time of year. This indicates ongoing challenges for water availability in Yorkshire.
