Abu Dhabi Plans 10 Vertiports to Launch Air Taxis

Abu Dhabi is set to enhance its transportation infrastructure with the establishment of a network of ten vertiports. This initiative aims to facilitate air taxi services and support electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs). The plan is part of the emirate’s broader strategy to promote smart and sustainable air mobility.

Key Locations for Upcoming Vertiports

Confirmed sites include Zayed International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport. These vertiports will connect vital urban, business, and tourism hubs such as Yas Island and Saadiyat. Additional locations and inter-city routes will be announced in subsequent phases.

Investment and Responsibilities

  • Abu Dhabi Airports will lead the development and investment for the vertiport network.
  • Elena Sorlini, managing director and chief executive of Abu Dhabi Airports, highlighted the importance of this project for advanced air mobility.

This initiative aligns with the UAE’s vision to enhance mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and attract international visitors.

Timeline for Air Taxi Services

The Emirate aims to commence commercial electric air taxi services by 2026. To support this goal, the UAE’s aviation regulator is expected to complete the certification process for air taxis by the third quarter of 2026.

Collaborative Efforts and Certifications

Earlier this year, Joby Aviation successfully conducted an electric air taxi test flight in collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority. Similarly, Archer Aviation tested its air taxi in Abu Dhabi.

  • The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has established regulations for integrating eVTOLs into the national aviation system.
  • Adaptations will also be made to existing heliports to create a robust air mobility infrastructure.

Strategic Partnerships for Future Growth

On the same day, a strategic partnership was formed between the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and China’s Aridge. This collaboration aims to expedite the certification, testing, and commercialization of advanced air mobility technologies within Abu Dhabi.

Badr Al-Olama, director general of ADIO, emphasized the potential of aerial vehicles to transform transport networks and alleviate congestion. The partnership will provide Aridge with regulatory support, testing corridors, and access to the local market.

Recent Developments in Passenger Traffic

In Q3 2025, Zayed International Airport served 8.35 million passengers, representing a 10.4% increase compared to the previous year. The airport also reported 49,073 aircraft movements, a 5.9% rise from the same period last year.

With these initiatives, Abu Dhabi is on track to redefine urban mobility, paving the way for the future of transportation in the region.
