FIFA Undermines Player Welfare with ‘Fake’ Unions, Says FIFPro

FIFA is under scrutiny for its alleged disregard for player welfare, as FIFPro, the global players’ union, takes legal action against the organization. Advocates claim that the congested football calendar jeopardizes players’ health.

Player Welfare Concerns

The issue of player welfare has escalated, with FIFPro reporting that increased scheduling has led to significant health risks for athletes. Notably, Manchester City midfielder Rodri expressed concerns about a potential strike among players due to the surge in match frequency. Ironically, he sustained a season-ending knee injury shortly afterward.

FIFA’s Response

FIFA recently held a meeting that included representatives from 30 national player unions and members of its Players’ Voice Panel, comprised of former players. The meeting aimed to address these concerns and laid the groundwork for various initiatives, including:

  • Creation of a Professional Players Consultation Forum
  • Support measures for improved rest and recovery
  • Implementation of a minimum of 72 hours of rest between matches
  • Ensuring at least 21 days between seasons

FIFA President Gianni Infantino asserted the organization’s commitment to enhancing player welfare. He emphasized FIFA’s desire for constructive dialogue, declaring that the door is open for opinions that align with its objectives.

Controversy Over Player Welfare Fund

Despite FIFA’s announcements, controversy surrounds its Player Welfare Fund. FIFPro claims that FIFA previously established such a fund, which was later dismantled in 2022. FIFA acknowledges the fund’s history but cites its ongoing tensions with FIFPro as a reason for its closure and subsequent relaunch with new funding sources.

FIFA has criticized FIFPro for opting for “theatrical denunciations” rather than collaborating effectively. In contrast, Maheta Molango, CEO of the Professional Footballers’ Association, expressed dismay over FIFA’s selective engagement with new player representatives. He suggested that FIFA’s approach undermines the efforts of recognized unions.

Mistakes in Communication

The Rabat meeting on player welfare follows a similar, controversial gathering in New York in July. FIFPro was notably excluded from this earlier meeting, which coincided with the expanded Club World Cup final.

FIFA indicated that its decision to exclude FIFPro was due to unsuccessful attempts to involve them in the discussions. The organization is facing substantial criticism for what many see as a failure to prioritize the voices of established player unions in their outreach efforts.
