Students Champion Fourth Annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

On November 14, students, families, and community members from local schools will unite for the fourth annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. This event, led by students, celebrates the themes of courage, inclusion, and the continual push for equity in education.

Event Highlights

The walk is scheduled to start at approximately 7:20 a.m. Students from Gage Elementary, Pershing Middle, and Patrick Henry High School will wear purple shirts and carry lunchboxes as they walk together. This symbolic journey honors Ruby Bridges, who, at just six years old in 1960, became the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in Louisiana.

Growing Participation

Anticipation for this year’s event is high, with organizers expecting around 400 attendees. The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day fosters unity among students across different grade levels. It provides a platform for diversity through student-led art, reflections, and conversations.

Community and Educational Impact

Dr. Fabi Bagula, Superintendent of San Diego Unified School District, expressed the significance of this event. “Ruby Bridges’ story reminds us of the power of courage and empathy,” she stated. “Our students are honoring her legacy and promoting inclusion in their schools and communities.”

Collaboration for Inclusion

This event is a part of San Diego Unified’s broader initiative to empower students in creating inclusive school environments. Schools like Hamilton and Ibarra Elementary will also participate in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, honoring Bridges’ legacy of inclusion.

Commitment to Student Wellness

The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day aligns with San Diego Unified’s Student Achievement Goal #1: Student Wellness. It highlights the district’s commitment to fostering student voice, belonging, and overall well-being.
