Doritos and Cheetos Launch NKD Line: No Artificial Colors or Flavors

PepsiCo has unveiled a new line of snacks under its popular brands, Cheetos and Doritos. The products, named Simply NKD, are set to offer a healthier alternative by eliminating artificial flavors and colors.

Launch of Simply NKD Line

On Thursday, PepsiCo announced the launch of its Simply NKD line. This initiative aims to provide snacking options with the bold flavors that fans love, but without any artificial dyes or flavors. Hernán Tantardini, the chief marketing officer at PepsiCo, stated, “No color, no artificial flavors, same intensity — that’s Simply NKD.”

Product Details and Availability

The Simply NKD snacks will feature known flavors such as:

  • Doritos Nacho Cheese
  • Doritos Cool Ranch
  • Cheetos Puffs
  • Cheetos Flamin’ Hot

Although marketed as “colorless,” the chips will actually be a pale yellow, similar to that of traditional corn chips. They can be pre-ordered now and will hit retail shelves on December 1.

Regulatory Context and Health Concerns

This product launch occurs amid increasing scrutiny from federal regulators. U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has indicated that synthetic dyes, often petroleum-based, may be phased out in food products by the end of next year. Concerns over the effects of food dyes, especially on children, are being closely monitored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), although definitive links have not been established.

PepsiCo has not commented on these regulatory movements or the ongoing debates regarding food dye safety. The introduction of Simply NKD reflects a significant shift in the snack food industry, as brands adapt to consumer demands for cleaner, healthier ingredient choices.
