Valve Unveils New Steam Console, VR Headset, and Controller for 2026 Launch

Valve recently unveiled exciting developments for Steam, announcing the release of a new console-like device, VR headset, and controller. These innovations are set to launch in early 2026 alongside SteamOS. Pricing details remain undisclosed.

Steam Machine: Enhanced Power and Performance

The Steam Machine represents a significant upgrade, boasting six times the power of the Steam Deck. It will support the entire Steam library, allowing users to play both AAA and indie titles seamlessly. Games compatible with the Steam Machine will be marked with a “Steam Machine Verified” tag, similar to the existing “Steam Deck Verified” label.

This device, designed as a compact 6-inch cube, can easily fit under a television or on a desk, featuring an LED strip to indicate system status such as download progress.

Introducing the Steam Frame VR Headset

Alongside the Steam Machine, Valve is launching the Steam Frame, a wireless virtual reality headset focused on streaming capabilities. It will come with controllers and is designed to deliver “wireless, comfortable, lightweight VR.” The headset will support both VR and non-VR titles, marked by the “Steam Frame Verified” tag.

A standout feature of the Steam Frame is Foveated Streaming, which enhances visual quality by using eye-tracking data to optimize pixel placement. This technology aims to provide a superior immersive experience.

Revamped Steam Controller

Valve also introduced a redesigned Steam Controller, significantly improved from the 2015 version. This new controller includes the familiar A, B, X, and Y buttons, thumbsticks, and a directional pad. It now features two large trackpads near the grips, enhancing mouse-like precision.

With TMR technology, the thumbsticks ensure a more responsive experience while increasing durability. The controller also incorporates haptic feedback for added immersion and a grip-enabled gyro known as Grip Sense. This innovative feature allows players to toggle gyro aiming simply by holding or releasing the controller.

Compatibility and Future Prospects

The new Steam Controller is accompanied by the Steam Controller Puck, a wireless transmitter that functions as both a charging station and a reliable hardware connection. Valve’s existing products, such as the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED, will remain available and are compatible with the new hardware.
