Actor Misdiagnoses Rare Cancer as Flu, Loses Half a Lung
Theatre actor Jarryd Nurden is making headlines with his remarkable return to the West End stage just six months post-surgery for a rare lung cancer. Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Nurden’s passion for performing was evident from a young age. After relocating to London in 2021, his journey took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with primary malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm of the lung, also known as atypical carcinoid.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Rare Cancer
Nurden’s battle began amidst plans to establish his West End career. In early 2022, he was preparing for a role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella when he fell ill with what he thought was a severe flu. After medical investigations, he received life-altering news: a tumor had been found in his lung. This tumor had doubled in size, leading to urgent medical intervention.
Major Surgery and Recovery

- Type of Cancer: Primary malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm (atypical carcinoid)
- Key Operations: Keyhole surgery in August 2023, followed by a lobectomy in October 2023 to remove the lower lobe of his lung.
Even though the main tumor was removed, remnants of cancerous cells prompted a major surgery. The recovery was challenging, marked by complications and extended hospital stays. Within this difficult period, Nurden faced immense emotional and physical challenges, pondering if he would ever return to the stage.
Resilience and Return to the Stage
Supported by the Actors’ Trust, Nurden managed to cope during his treatment, which involved months of limited mobility due to a chest drain. Despite these obstacles, his determination never waned. He turned down various roles but kept his hopes high for future performances.
First Role Back: Chicago
Eager to reclaim his place in the theatre, Nurden eventually accepted a role in the musical Chicago. Just three months after his surgery, he took on the character Mary Sunshine. His initial performance returned him to the West End, filled with gratitude and pride after overcoming a life-threatening illness.
