Actor Mistakes Rare Cancer for Flu, Loses Half a Lung
Theatre actor Jarryd Nurden has made a remarkable comeback to the West End stage just six months after a major surgery. This life-changing surgery involved the removal of half of his lung due to a rare type of cancer. Originally hailing from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Nurden dreamed of performing in London’s prestigious theatre district.
Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Nurden’s journey took a daunting turn when he was diagnosed with primary malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm of the lung, commonly known as atypical carcinoid. His diagnosis followed a series of symptoms that started with what he thought was a severe flu. After experiencing prolonged illness, doctors discovered a tumor in January 2023, which had doubled in size since its last examination.
The actor underwent keyhole surgery to evaluate the tumor, which was confirmed to be cancerous. Initially optimistic, he faced harsh realities when informed that he would require a completion lobectomy—a procedure to remove the entire lower lobe of his lung—to eliminate remaining cancerous cells.
Life-Changing Surgery

Nurden’s surgery was fraught with complications, requiring additional operations due to infections. He spent four months in the hospital, grappling with fears of never performing again. With the help of the Actors’ Trust, he found financial support, allowing him to focus on his recovery without added stress.
Return to the Stage
Despite all odds, Nurden made a triumphant return to the stage just three months post-surgery. He took on the role of Mary Sunshine in the musical “Chicago.” This experience was emotionally overwhelming, as he reflected on his journey back from a potentially life-threatening diagnosis.
“Taking that bow gave me immense gratitude,” Nurden said. “I appreciated being back on stage in a show I love with such a supportive company.”
