MSU’s Smith Unaware of NCAA Investigation Before Hiring

Jonathan Smith, the head coach of Michigan State’s football team, began his tenure in November 2023. He was unaware of the ongoing NCAA investigation at the time of his hiring. This investigation has led to significant penalties for the program due to previous recruiting violations associated with former coach Mel Tucker.

NCAA Penalties for Michigan State Football

On Wednesday, the NCAA announced a series of sanctions against Michigan State, which include:

  • Recruiting limitations
  • Three years of probation
  • A monetary fine
  • Vacating 14 victories involving ineligible players

These vacated victories include five from Smith’s first season leading the Spartans, which impacted the program’s official records. Smith claimed he first learned of the investigation early in the current year.

Details of Violations

The NCAA’s findings revealed that two Michigan State staff members provided impermissible benefits, including plane tickets and hotel stays, to nine recruits. This led to the NCAA voiding all wins for games in which three ineligible players participated during the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons. Notably, the NCAA did not inform the university of any player eligibility issues until January 2025.

Smith’s Contractual Obligations

Under Section 8.10 of his contract, Smith must cooperate with NCAA investigations and report any violations. However, there was no stipulation requiring Michigan State to disclose past investigations before his hiring. The contract also allows adaptations based on any extenuating circumstances related to NCAA sanctions.

Michigan State’s Response

The university announced it is pursuing a negotiated resolution to reduce penalties and protect current players and staff. Athletic director J Batt and President Kevin Guskiewicz expressed disappointment regarding the vacated records. Smith also believes the penalties deserve reevaluation.

Current Program Status

Currently, Michigan State holds a record of 3-14 under Smith, including a series of losses, with fans expressing discontent during recent games. In a 28-10 loss to Penn State, which had previously struggled in conference play, calls for Smith’s job intensified.

Contract Details and Implications

Smith’s seven-year contract, signed in December 2023, is valued at $52.85 million and is 85% guaranteed. Changes in his contract following the departure of former athletic director Alan Haller in May 2025 have adjusted the financial repercussions if Smith were to leave before the end of his term. Smith would owe Michigan State $3 million if he departs before December 2 or $2 million afterward.

Smith faces increasing pressure during the remainder of the season, with two games left against Iowa (November 22) and Maryland (November 29) at Ford Field. The coach aims to assure recruits that as the program continues, the previous violations will not influence their experience at Michigan State.
