Loganair CEO Seeks Blue Islands Staff Support
Loganair CEO Luke Farajallah is actively seeking assistance from former Blue Islands staff following the latter’s cessation of operations. Blue Islands, a Channel Islands airline, announced on a Friday that it was suspending trading and canceling all future flights, affecting approximately 100 employees.
Rescue Flights Initiated by Loganair
In response to the flight cancellations, Loganair and Aurigny quickly implemented rescue flights. Aurigny began its operations on Saturday, while Loganair commenced services the following day. These flights are crucial for connecting destinations like Jersey, Guernsey, Exeter, and Southampton.
Within 36 hours of the Blue Islands announcement, Loganair dispatched two planes to Jersey. The Government of Jersey covered contingency costs to secure these essential services, though specific amounts have not been disclosed.
Recruitment Opportunities for Former Blue Islands Staff
Farajallah revealed that Loganair is conducting recruitment days in St Helier on the upcoming Monday and Tuesday. He expressed hope that former Blue Islands employees would consider joining Loganair, stating, “We’re going to need them.” He emphasized this recruiting effort as part of Loganair’s strategy to increase operations and “ramp up to a full schedule” by March.
Financial Health and Expansion Plans
The CEO reassured islanders about Loganair’s financial stability, indicating that the company carries no government or bank debt. He remarked, “Financial strength is everything – we have a clean balance sheet.” Loganair is committed to prudent investments while thoroughly analyzing all aspects of its business.
Additionally, the airline has completed the necessary licensing for its Guernsey to Southampton route and is awaiting approval from the States of Guernsey.
Community Support and Future Considerations
Ports of Jersey CEO Matt Thomas acknowledged the challenges faced since the Blue Islands announcement, referring to the period as “a bit of a rollercoaster.” He extended support to former Blue Islands staff and passengers affected by the sudden disruption. Thomas asked islanders to be patient during the initial weeks of new flight operations, anticipating that the first few weeks may present some challenges.
He maintained optimism regarding Jersey’s appeal to airlines. The effective transition to alternative flight services is crucial in addressing immediate travel needs for islanders.
