Raiders Update: Coordinator Praises Stokes, Bestows New Nickname
Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham recently attempted to introduce a new nickname for cornerback Eric Stokes, referring to him as “EPMD.” The moniker is a nod to the classic hip-hop group and their influential 1988 album “Strictly Business.” Graham praised Stokes for his physicality, tackling ability, and leadership on the field.
Stokes’ Performance and Reaction
Despite Graham’s enthusiasm, Stokes, born a decade after the album’s release, has not fully embraced the nickname. He playfully remarked on Graham’s lighthearted attempt at humor, noting that it reflects Graham’s view of him as serious during games. Stokes expressed confidence in his current performance, feeling he is playing some of the best football of his career.
“I made a lot of plays when I was a rookie, but I feel now I’m better at understanding and being comfortable in my role,” Stokes explained. Currently, he has recorded three pass breakups this season, highlighting his growth as a player.
Cornerback Challenges Ahead
Stokes anticipates challenges in upcoming games, particularly against strong receivers like CeeDee Lamb and his former Georgia teammate George Pickens. He acknowledged Pickens’ impressive catching ability, which adds pressure to cornerbacks like him.
NFLPA Survey and Raiders’ Rankings
In league news, the NFL has filed a grievance against the NFL Players Association regarding their annual survey that rates teams on various aspects, including player treatment and food services. The NFL claims this survey violates the collective bargaining agreement by allowing public criticism of teams.
Despite this, the NFLPA intends to conduct another survey this year. Raiders player representative AJ Cole emphasized the importance of these surveys in enhancing workplace standards across the league. The Raiders have generally scored well in these evaluations, recently improving their grade for “Treatment of Families” from a C-plus in 2024 to a B-plus this year.
Injury Updates
The Raiders are also monitoring player injuries ahead of their upcoming game against the Cowboys. Notably, wide receiver Tyler Lockett participated fully in practice after dealing with a knee injury. Rookie linebacker Cody Lindenberg practiced in a limited capacity due to an Achilles injury, while running back Dylan Laube, despite a foot issue, was also a full participant.
- Eric Stokes’ nickname: EPMD
- Season statistics: 3 pass breakups
