Meetings in Turkey
During his time in Turkey, Zelenskyy is expected to meet with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. Despite the anticipated discussions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that no Russian representatives would participate in the talks scheduled for November 19.
U.S. Engagement in Peace Efforts
A senior Ukrainian official indicated that Zelenskyy’s primary goal is to encourage the United States to take a more active role in peace negotiations. This comes amid concerns regarding former President Donald Trump’s unpredictable stance on the conflict.
Historically, Ukraine and Russia have engaged in multiple discussions mediated by both the U.S. and Turkey, particularly in Istanbul. However, no in-person meetings have occurred since their last encounter in July, which yielded minimal progress aside from facilitating a few prisoner exchanges.

Zelenskyy’s visit follows a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, where Ukraine secured an agreement for up to 100 fighter jets and additional military hardware. This escalation in military support has prompted criticism from the Kremlin, which accused France of increasing militaristic sentiment rather than fostering peace.
