Former Browns QB Bernie Kosar Receives Liver Transplant After Year-Long Wait

Former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar has successfully undergone a liver transplant after enduring a year-long wait. The surgery occurred on Monday, and Kosar expressed his relief and positivity in a social media update. He stated, “Hey, I’m out and I’m feeling good. Just ready to enjoy the rest of the week and the rest of our lives.”

Health Challenges Leading to Transplant

Kosar has faced significant health issues, including cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease. Initially diagnosed with cirrhosis in late 2023, the 61-year-old from Youngstown had experienced liver problems for years but did not identify the causes. He officially joined the transplant waiting list in July last year.

Though Kosar was scheduled for a transplant last weekend, it was postponed due to an infected donor organ. In the week leading up to his successful surgery, he underwent five procedures aimed at halting internal bleeding.

Career Highlights

During his 12-season NFL career, Kosar became a notable figure, especially as a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. He led the University of Miami to its first national championship in 1983. Selected by the Browns in the 1985 NFL supplemental draft, Kosar played for the team until 1993, leading them to three AFC championship games (1986, 1987, and 1989), though they lost each to the Denver Broncos. He ranks third in franchise history with 21,904 passing yards.

After leaving the Browns, Kosar played for the Dallas Cowboys, where he earned a Super Bowl ring, and later for the Miami Dolphins from 1994 to 1996.

Community Support

The Cleveland community has shown strong support for Kosar. Before a recent game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Browns honored him with a tribute video. Head coach Kevin Stefanski reflected on Kosar’s significant impact on the community, stating, “Bernie’s my guy. This town has such a special relationship with Bernie, and we are all rooting for him.”

As Kosar continues his recovery, the NFL and its fans rally behind a beloved figure whose contributions to football and the community remain cherished.
