Kessler Twins, Legendary German Duo, Die Together via Assisted Suicide

The Kessler Twins, Alice and Ellen, renowned German entertainers, have passed away in Grünwald, a suburb of Munich. They were 89 years old. Their deaths were confirmed by Munich police, stating it was a “joint suicide” which the German Society for Humane Dying later labeled as assisted suicide.

Kessler Twins: An Iconic Career

The Kessler sisters embarked on their artistic journey at an early age, beginning their dance training at the Leipzig Opera children’s ballet. In 1952, at the age of 16, they fled to West Germany. Soon after, they gained recognition in Düsseldorf’s revue theaters.

Rise to Fame

In 1955, their talents were discovered by the director of the famous Lido cabaret in Paris, launching their international career. Throughout the 1960s, the Kessler Twins toured widely and performed alongside iconic artists like Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, and Harry Belafonte. Interestingly, they declined a role alongside Elvis Presley in the 1964 classic, “Viva Las Vegas,” wary of being pigeonholed in Hollywood musicals.

Legacy of Togetherness

Even into their 80s, the twins remained active in the entertainment industry. Alice once remarked that their lifelong partnership was crucial for their endurance. “Being a twosome has only advantages. Together, you’re stronger,” she stated. The secret to their lasting success included discipline, gratitude, humility, and their strong bond.

Final Wishes

In a touching statement made in April 2024, the twins expressed their desire to be buried together in the same urn, alongside the ashes of their mother and dog. “That’s what we stipulated in our wills,” Ellen emphasized.

Assisted Suicide in Context

Assisted suicide remains a legal option in several regions. In Europe, it is permitted in nine countries, as well as in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of South America. The conversation around assisted dying has gained traction in the United States, with ongoing discussions in states like New York regarding similar legislation.

The Kessler Twins, who left a lasting mark on the world of entertainment, will be remembered for their remarkable contribution and enduring partnership. Their story reflects both their artistic journey and their profound mutual bond until the very end.
