Alex Ovechkin Sets NHL Record for Most Goals at Single Venue
Alex Ovechkin made history by scoring the 903rd goal of his NHL career. This achievement helped the Washington Capitals clinch a narrow 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Historic Milestone at Capital One Arena
Ovechkin’s latest goal was significant for multiple reasons. It brought him just one goal away from tying Jaromir Jagr for the most game-winning goals in NHL history, with 151. More notably, it set a new record for the most goals scored by a player at a single venue in NHL history.
Breaking Gordie Howe’s Record
With his goal number 442 at Capital One Arena, Ovechkin surpassed Gordie Howe, who previously held the record with 441 goals scored at Detroit Olympia. This achievement emphasizes Ovechkin’s impact in the league and at his home venue.
| Player | Venue | Goals |
|---|---|---|
| Alex Ovechkin | Capital One Arena | 442 |
| Gordie Howe | Detroit Olympia | 441 |
| Mario Lemieux | Mellon Arena | 373 |
| Bobby Hull | Chicago Stadium | 342 |
| Steve Yzerman | Joe Louis Arena | 330 |
Ovechkin’s Career at Capital One Arena
Ovechkin has played his entire 21-season career at this arena, which has undergone several name changes. Initially known as the MCI Center (1997-2006) and then the Verizon Center (2006-2017), it has been home to many of his milestones. He scored his first two NHL goals there during his debut against the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 5, 2005.
Performance at Age 40
Ovechkin’s goal also places him among an elite group of players. He is the third player since the 2020-21 season to record a two-game goal streak at age 40 or older. Other players include Corey Perry and Patrick Marleau. The last player to score in three consecutive games at this age was Matt Cullen in the 2016-17 season.
Current Season Progress
This season, Ovechkin has tallied six goals in 19 games, which puts him on track to achieve 25 goals by the end of the year. He has also recently shown an uptick in performance, accumulating eight points (four goals, four assists) in his last seven games.
