Former Penn State Coaches Join James Franklin at Virginia Tech

Former Penn State head football coach James Franklin is set to join Virginia Tech as their new head coach. His move comes after a successful 12-year tenure with the Nittany Lions and has prompted significant changes within the coaching staff.

Coaching Staff Changes

With Franklin’s transition to Virginia Tech, several key figures from his previous coaching staff will also make the move to Blacksburg. Notable departures from Penn State include:

  • Kevin Threlkel: Former Associate Athletic Director and Chief of Staff, Threlkel previously worked alongside Franklin at Kansas State, Maryland, and Vanderbilt. At Penn State, he managed the football program’s administrative functions, budget, and contracts.
  • Andy Frank: The General Manager of Personnel and Recruitment was pivotal in overseeing the recruiting department at Penn State. Like Threlkel, he followed Franklin from Vanderbilt.

Both Threlkel and Frank will not be present for the remainder of the regular season with the Nittany Lions.

Additional Staff Departures

The coaching shake-up does not stop with Threlkel and Frank. Additional staff members who will no longer finish out the season at Penn State include:

  • Brett Arnold – Assistant Director of Player Relations
  • Chris Mahon – Recruiting Coordinator for Personnel
  • Rashad Erby – Assistant Recruiting Coordinator for Personnel
  • Aeneas Hawkins – Assistant Director of Player Advancement & Revenue Sharing Strategy

This restructuring signifies a significant shift within the Penn State football program as it adapts to Franklin’s absence and prepares for future challenges.
