Photos and Poetry Revitalize NYC Subway for MTA Arts’ 40th Anniversary
New Yorkers can now experience a vibrant new dimension of art as part of the MTA’s 40th anniversary of its Arts & Design program. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently unveiled new photographic exhibitions and poetry installations in several subway stations, including Grand Central Madison and 42 St-Bryant Park.
New Art Installations Enhance Subway Experience
The latest additions showcase two lens-based exhibitions that reflect the diverse communities of New York City. Commuters can view these engaging visuals as they navigate some of the city’s most frequented transit hubs.
Poetry in Motion
Alongside the visual art, the MTA has also introduced two new poems, which will be displayed in various formats across the transit system. Riders will find these literary works on printed materials as well as on digital screens within subway cars, at platforms, and in commuter rail and Metro-North Railroad stations.

- Long Island Rail Road stations
The poems were carefully selected in collaboration with the Poetry Society of America, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting poetry since 1910. This initiative allows poetry to resonate at the heart of American culture.
Celebrating 40 Years of Arts & Design
As the MTA marks this milestone, the contributions of various artists and poets enrich the commuting experience. The photography and poetry featured in this program are intended to evoke deep connections with riders.
Tina Vaz, the director of the Arts & Design program, highlighted the unique storytelling power of photography and the cultural significance of the Poetry in Motion initiative. “These works are fundamental to our year-long anniversary celebration,” Vaz stated.
