Former Bucs QB Kyle Trask Joins Division Rival Team

Quarterback Kyle Trask has officially returned to the NFL after signing with the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Head coach Raheem Morris made the announcement on Wednesday. This move comes amid injuries within the Falcons’ quarterback lineup, which includes the loss of Michael Penix Jr. for the remainder of the season due to a partially torn ACL.

In addition to Trask, Atlanta also signed Easton Stick to their practice squad. With both Penix and third-string quarterback Emory Jones injured, the Falcons faced a significant gap in their roster. Kirk Cousins, 37, will step up as the starting quarterback again, despite struggling after signing a four-year, $180 million contract last season.

Kyle Trask’s Journey in the NFL

Kyle Trask was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, selected 64th overall. The selection was met with mixed reactions as Tampa Bay was the defending Super Bowl champion at that time. Trask became a third-string quarterback but only played in one game during the 2022 season against the Falcons.

In 2023, the Bucs signed Baker Mayfield, resulting in a quarterback competition. Mayfield secured the starting position, leading Tampa Bay to a division title. Trask remained as the primary backup but did not see much action.

Future Prospects for Trask

After an underwhelming stint with the Bucs, Trask showcased his skills during the preseason in 2025. However, Tampa Bay opted for other quarterbacks, including Teddy Bridgewater and Connor Bazelak, leaving him to search for opportunities elsewhere. His signing with the Falcons now presents a fresh start in the competitive NFC South.

The Falcons and Buccaneers are scheduled to meet again in Week 15, adding an intriguing layer to Trask’s transition to his new team.
