Stone Roses and Primal Scream Bassist Mani Passes Away
Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the legendary bassist known for his influence in the Madchester music scene, has passed away at the age of 63. His brother Greg shared the news through a heartfelt Facebook post, expressing his deep sorrow over Mani’s death.
Mani’s Musical Journey
Born and raised in Manchester, Mani’s musical career began in the early 1980s with the band Fireside Chaps. He collaborated with guitarist John Squire before the band renamed itself to the Waterfront. In 1983, they welcomed singer Ian Brown, who later co-founded the Stone Roses with Squire.
In 1987, Mani became the final member to join the Stone Roses, completing the classic lineup that featured drummer Alan “Reni” Wren. His contribution to their sound was profound. Ian Brown noted that Mani’s addition transformed the band’s dynamic entirely, establishing a distinctive groove that set them apart.

Their self-titled debut album, released in 1989, became iconic, showcasing memorable tracks such as “I Wanna Be Adored” and “Fools Gold.”
