Virginia Tech Aligns with James Franklin as New Football Coach
Virginia Tech has officially hired James Franklin as its new football coach, marking a significant shift for the Hokies’ athletic program. This announcement comes about a month after Franklin was dismissed from his previous position at Penn State. His introduction coincided with his first experience of Virginia Tech’s famous “Enter Sandman” tradition at Cassell Coliseum, a moment he described as special.

During the press conference, Franklin expressed excitement about his new role. “I’ve been watching that intro to college football my entire life,” he stated, donning a maroon tie and pocket square.
Commitment to Alignment and Investment
Virginia Tech’s athletic director, Whit Babcock, emphasized the program’s future direction. “Today is a statement about where we are headed as an athletic department and as a university, one built on alignment, investment, and ambition,” Babcock noted. This theme of alignment was echoed by Franklin and university president Tim Sands.
In September, following the departure of former head coach Brent Pry, the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors approved a $229 million budget increase for the athletic department over four years. This investment aims to enhance the football program significantly.
Franklin’s Coaching Background
Franklin comes to Virginia Tech with a notable coaching history. While he struggled at Penn State against top contenders like Ohio State and Michigan, his overall record stands at a commendable 68.1% win rate, alongside eight bowl victories in 15 seasons at both Penn State and Vanderbilt. Notably, Franklin led the Nittany Lions to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff last season.
Despite his dismissal after a disappointing season and a third consecutive loss to Northwestern, Franklin’s experience positions him well to revitalize the Hokies. Virginia Tech has had only one winning season in the last six years, and they have not participated in a major bowl game since 2011.
A Promising Future
James Franklin has signed a five-year contract with Virginia Tech. He brings extensive recruiting expertise and connections in the Mid-Atlantic region, cultivated during his prior coaching roles. His hands-on approach includes a noteworthy interaction with Frank Beamer, the most successful coach in Hokies history, who acknowledged Franklin’s leadership potential.
As college football continues to evolve, it is now James Franklin’s opportunity to leave his mark on Virginia Tech football.
