Colorado Enacts Law Requiring Snow Chains for Specific Vehicles
Drivers in Colorado must now adhere to stricter winter preparedness laws, particularly when navigating Interstate 70. A recently enacted law mandates that all two-wheel drive (2WD) vehicles carry snow chains during specific winter conditions.
New Regulations for Winter Driving in Colorado
This law applies to the section of I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison and is enforced from September 1 to May 31. While the traction law is effective throughout the winter, the mandatory use of snow chains is only enforced when the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) declare severe weather conditions.
Who Must Comply?
- All two-wheel drive vehicles must carry snow chains.
- Front-wheel drive vehicles are also required to have chains.
- All-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles need winter-rated tires with a minimum tread depth of 3/16 inches.
CDOT spokesperson Andrew Hogle noted that while preparation is essential, there will not be regular chain checkpoints. However, drivers may be questioned about their preparedness if stopped by law enforcement.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to adhere to these regulations can result in significant fines:
- A $50 fine for failing to carry necessary chains.
- Fines can reach up to $500 for blocking traffic due to lack of chains.
