On the day of the game, UAB confirmed that a teammate was implicated in the stabbing. The players, who were not identified, were reported to be in stable condition after being transported to UAB Hospital. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service assisted in their transfer.

Daniel Mincey, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman who had transferred from Kentucky, was arrested by UAB campus police. He was booked into Jefferson County Jail shortly after the incident, facing serious charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
