Kia, Hyundai Recall 335,000 Vehicles Over Melting Fuel Tank Risk

Kia and Hyundai are initiating a significant recall affecting approximately 335,000 vehicles in the United States. This action is prompted by a potential risk of fuel tank melting, which could lead to dangerous fuel leaks.

Kia and Hyundai Recall Details

The recall includes:

  • 250,547 Kia K5 sedans from model years 2021–2024
  • 85,043 Hyundai Sonata vehicles from model years 2020–2023

All affected models come equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Cause of the Issue

The NHTSA states that the problem originates from a purge control system check valve that may experience wear over time. This wear can lead to excessive pressure build-up in the fuel tank.

If this situation occurs, the fuel tank may expand and come into contact with hot exhaust components. Prolonged driving under these conditions could result in localized melting of the fuel tank, potentially causing fuel leaks.

Manufacturer Response

Hyundai and Kia will reach out to owners of the affected vehicles with specific instructions. Customers are advised to monitor communications from their automakers regarding the recall.

Inspection and Repair Process

Dealership technicians will conduct inspections to replace the faulty valve and check for any damage to the fuel tank. This action is crucial to ensure the safety of vehicle operation.

Previous Recalls

This recall follows Hyundai’s announcement last month of over 135,000 vehicles being recalled due to potential short-circuits during crashes. Additionally, Kia recently issued two recalls affecting over 300,000 vehicles due to loose parts that could pose safety hazards.

For further inquiries, Kia and Hyundai are yet to provide immediate comments. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed about additional recall information affecting their vehicles.
