Mayor Johnson: Loop Shootings Killing Teen, Injuring 8 Set Chicago Back
In a tragic incident on Friday night in downtown Chicago, one teenager was killed and eight others were injured during two separate shootings. Authorities have not yet made any arrests related to these cases, which have raised serious concerns about safety in the city.
Details of the Shootings
The first shooting occurred around 9:50 p.m. near the intersection of State and Randolph streets, close to the Chicago Theatre. In this incident, seven teenagers were wounded. Their ages ranged from 13 to 17 years old. Officers on patrol heard gunshots and quickly responded, locating the victims who were then transported to Stroger Hospital and Lurie Children’s Hospital in fair to good condition.
Approximately 30 minutes later, a second shooting took place near Adams and Dearborn streets. This resulted in two additional victims, including 14-year-old Armani Floyd, who was fatally shot. The second individual, an 18-year-old male, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition due to a gunshot wound.
Responses and Actions by Authorities
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the incidents, indicating that it remains unclear whether the two shootings are connected. He noted that the violence was a significant setback for the city, occurring shortly after the Millennium Park Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
- 18 arrests made on the night of the shootings
- 5 firearms recovered by police
- Extra 700 police officers assigned to patrol
Johnson acknowledged that police were aware of social media discussions hinting at a potential “teen takeover” event that night. In light of these concerns, the city communicated with families through letters from Chicago Public Schools.
Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation
Despite the heightened police presence, the events unfolded with tragic consequences. Mayor Johnson stressed the importance of educating young people about the dangers of attending unauthorized gatherings promoted online. As of Sunday morning, no suspects were in custody, and Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrests.
Authorities are committed to investigating these incidents thoroughly to enhance safety in the community and prevent future violence.
