Raiders Dismiss Chip Kelly as Offensive Coordinator
The Las Vegas Raiders have decided to terminate the contract of offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. This decision follows a disappointing season marked by a series of losses.
Chip Kelly’s Tenure with the Raiders
Sources revealed that the Raiders allowed Kelly, who was the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL, to part ways with the team. He joined Las Vegas’ coaching staff under head coach Pete Carroll earlier this year, after achieving notable success at Ohio State.
Recent Performance and Dismissal Reasons
The decision to remove Kelly from his position comes on the heels of a 24-10 defeat to the Cleveland Browns. This loss dropped the Raiders’ record to 2-9 for the season. The team struggled offensively, scoring 16 points or fewer in three consecutive games.
Initially, there were high hopes for the Raiders’ offense this season following Kelly’s hiring. The team drafted running back Ashton Jeanty and traded for quarterback Geno Smith, aiming to revamp their attacking strategy. However, the offense has struggled, averaging only 4.7 yards per play, ranking third-worst in the league.
Additional Coaching Changes
In addition to Kelly’s dismissal, the Raiders also made changes to their special teams unit. Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon was released in November, indicating a broader desire for improvement within the team’s coaching staff.
The Raiders are now faced with the challenge of rebuilding their offense as they move forward in the 2023 season.
