Trump Moves to Label Muslim Brotherhood Chapters as Terrorist Organizations
President Donald J. Trump has taken significant action to address national security concerns associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. He signed an Executive Order that calls for a review of whether specific chapters of the organization should be designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
Details of the Executive Order
The Executive Order directs the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury to evaluate various chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood. This includes organizations located in countries such as Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan.
The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Treasury, in collaboration with the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence, must submit a report within 45 days. If deemed necessary, they will take steps to designate these chapters as FTOs under U.S. law.
Aim of the Designations
The primary goal of this order is to disrupt the activities of the designated chapters. By labeling these groups as terrorist organizations, the U.S. aims to:
- Eliminate their operational capabilities.
- Deprive them of financial resources.
- Mitigate any threats to national security.
Response to Recent Threats
President Trump’s actions come in response to increasing threats from the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network. Following the October 7, 2023, attack, it was reported that the Lebanese chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood played a role in coordinating rocket attacks against Israeli targets.
Additionally, a senior leader in the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood allegedly incited attacks against U.S. interests on the same day as the attacks by Hamas. Reports have also indicated that Jordanian leaders in the Brotherhood have supported Hamas militantly.
Continued Anti-Terrorism Efforts
Trump has emphasized the need for effective counterterrorism measures to ensure the safety of Americans and to promote stability worldwide. Earlier in the year, he initiated efforts to designate the Houthis, or Ansar Allah, as an FTO as part of broader security initiatives in the Middle East.
Moreover, the administration designated several other organizations, including drug cartels, as FTOs to combat violence and illegal activities. Hundreds of terrorist gang members have been deported to ensure that U.S. soil remains safe.
Proactive Measures for National Security
In June, Trump signed a Proclamation limiting the entry of non-immigrants from countries associated with terrorism. His administration has also conducted military actions against narcoterrorists, further illustrating its commitment to safeguarding American security.
With the latest Executive Order, President Trump reinforces his administration’s dedication to preserving international peace and enhancing the safety of the United States.
