Red Sox Secure Sonny Gray Acquisition
The Boston Red Sox have finalized a trade to acquire right-hander Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals. This agreement, reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, marks a significant move for both teams involved.
Trade Details
Sonny Gray, who recently turned 36, had initially opted against waiving his full no-trade clause last offseason. At that time, the Cardinals announced a shift in strategy, focusing on player development instead of immediate wins.
After a disappointing season in 2025, where the Cardinals missed playoffs, Gray publicly expressed interest in trade possibilities as the team moves toward a lengthy rebuilding phase. He stated, “I signed here two years ago with the expectation of winning, and that hasn’t played out that way. I want to win.”
Opportunity with the Red Sox
Gray’s new journey with the Red Sox places him in a team eager for postseason success. Boston’s rotation features Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet, while their offense is led by emerging talent Roman Anthony. In the past season, the Red Sox secured a Wild Card spot but lost to the Yankees in the playoffs.
Contract Breakdown
Gray is entering the final guaranteed year of a three-year, $75 million contract that he signed with the Cardinals while coming off a strong performance with the Minnesota Twins. The nature of this contract is heavily backloaded, with Gray set to earn $35 million in 2026, along with a $5 million buyout on a club option for the 2027 season.
Although the option exists, Gray remains a likely rental for the Red Sox. Should he perform well enough for Boston to exercise the club option, he may choose to opt out and enter free agency. In such a scenario, the Red Sox would save the $5 million buyout.
Pitching Performance
Gray has proven to be a reliable pitcher, logging 180 2/3 innings with a 4.28 ERA in 2025. His performance has remained consistent, averaging 29 starts per season since 2019—excluding the shortened 2020 season. Across two seasons with the Cardinals, he put up a 4.07 ERA, with a strikeout rate of 28.4% and a low walk rate of 5.4%.
This acquisition reinforces the Red Sox’s commitment to competing for a championship while the Cardinals embrace a future focused on development and rebuilding.
More updates are expected as the Red Sox and Gray prepare for the upcoming season.
