Boar’s Head Recalls Products Due to Potential Listeria Risk
Boar’s Head has announced a recall of several products due to potential listeria contamination. This decision follows a previous outbreak that resulted in significant health consequences, including multiple fatalities.
Details of the Recall
The recall, issued by Ambriola Company, affects specific pecorino romano cheese products provided to Boar’s Head. This includes:
- Boar’s Head grated pecorino Romano cheese
- FS grated Romano cheese
These products have sell-by dates ranging from November 21, 2023, to March 12, 2026. They were primarily distributed to Kroger stores located in Kentucky and Indiana, and were also utilized in prepared meal options like chicken Caesar salads and wraps.
Background of the Listeria Outbreak
This precautionary measure comes in response to a listeria outbreak linked to a Boar’s Head facility in Virginia in July 2024. The outbreak resulted in the recall of over 7 million pounds of meat. Tragically, it led to the deaths of ten individuals and caused serious illnesses in many others.
Health Risks Associated with Listeria
Consuming products contaminated with listeria can result in listeriosis, a severe infection particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations. Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Headaches
- Stiff neck
- Convulsions
- Diarrhea
Pregnant women are at heightened risk, as listeriosis can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths. While no illnesses have yet been reported from this latest recall, food safety officials advise discarding the affected products.
Previous Concerns at Boar’s Head Facilities
In the wake of the earlier outbreak, inspections revealed unsanitary conditions at the Virginia plant and two other locations. Issues included:
- Unsanitary equipment
- Contaminated food surfaces
- Mold and insect infestations
Due to these findings, Boar’s Head has faced scrutiny and has reportedly settled with families of victims from the previous outbreak.
Call to Action for Consumers
Food safety authorities urge customers to dispose of any recalled items. If there is uncertainty about a product’s safety, it is advisable not to consume it.
Boar’s Head and Ambriola have yet to comment on the situation publicly. These recent recalls highlight the ongoing challenges faced in ensuring food safety.
