The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is set to return for its 99th edition on Thursday, November 28, 2024. This iconic event will bring joy to families across the U.S. as it showcases vibrant floats, massive balloons, and live performances in New York City.

This year’s parade will feature over 5,000 volunteers, 34 balloons, 28 floats, and 11 marching bands. Attendees will also enjoy live musical performances from renowned artists including Cynthia Erivo and Darlene Love.

A Brief History

Debuted in 1924 as the Macy’s Christmas Parade, the event initially featured live animals from Central Park Zoo. However, safety concerns led organizers to replace them with the beloved oversized balloons starting in 1927. This year will include iconic characters like Macy’s stars, Minnie Mouse, and Spider-Man.

How to Watch the Parade

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock. An encore presentation will air at 2 p.m. ET/PT. For Spanish-speaking audiences, Telemundo will provide a simulcast beginning at the same time. Additionally, a full broadcast with audio assistance will be available on the SAP channel for visually impaired viewers.

Hosts and Performers

Hoda Kotb will return as a co-host alongside Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker for the eighth time. Kotb expressed her excitement about the parade’s traditional elements and surprises. Celebrating the festive spirit, the lineup includes performances from EJAE, Audrey Nuna, REI AMI, Ciara, Colbie Caillat, Lil Jon, and Busta Rhymes, among others.

Special Features

This year, the parade will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Rockettes, showcasing a special performance. Traditional elements such as Santa and his sleigh will conclude the festivities, officially welcoming the holiday season.

Balloon Highlights

Macy’s will reintroduce historic balloon elements as they prepare for the parade’s centennial in 2026. New additions include Buzz Lightyear, PAC-MAN, Shrek’s Onion Carriage, and Mario, along with familiar favorites such as Snoopy and SpongeBob SquarePants.

For eager viewers, NBC and Peacock will broadcast a primetime special titled “Countdown to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade” at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27. This special will offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the preparations before the main event.
