Wind May Alter Balloon Plans at Detroit Thanksgiving Parade
Thanksgiving Day in Detroit is anticipated to present challenging weather conditions, with snow and wind potentially affecting the city’s traditional Thanksgiving Parade. Wind speeds are expected to reach 21 mph, with gusts up to 39 mph, which could necessitate adjustments to parade plans.
Weather Forecast for Detroit Thanksgiving Parade
The National Weather Service reports a likelihood of snow from midnight Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday. These conditions could lead to significant changes during the parade, especially concerning the larger balloon decorations.
Impact on Parade Balloons
According to Tony Michaels, CEO of The Parade Company, the six giant balloons scheduled to participate have a maximum wind tolerance of 25 mph. If winds exceed this limit, organizers may have to replace some of the larger balloons with smaller alternatives. Michaels stated, “It could mean, with this level of wind, that a balloon or two might have to sit out the parade, but we’re not sure.” Decisions regarding balloon participation will be made as the parade approaches.
Parade Details
Despite the weather challenges, parade organizers confirmed that the event will proceed. The Thanksgiving Parade is set to commence at 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Kirby Street, concluding at Congress Street.
