McLaren Urges FIA to Investigate Rule Changes After Las Vegas Disqualification
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has announced that the FIA is considering potential rule changes following the team’s disqualification in Las Vegas. Both drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, faced disqualification after their skid blocks were deemed excessively worn, violating technical regulations.
FIA’s Investigation into Rule Changes
Formula 1 regulations stipulate that skid blocks must maintain a minimum thickness of 9 mm by the race’s end. The penalty for exceeding this limit is immediate disqualification. Unfortunately for McLaren, there was little recourse due to the strict enforcement of these technical rules.
Stella noted that the FIA is looking into the idea of imposing lesser penalties based on the severity of technical infringements and any performance advantages gained.
Clarification of the Disqualification
- Both Norris and Piastri’s skid block wear was measured at 0.12 mm and 0.26 mm, respectively.
- The regulations require a consistent 9 mm thickness at all locations on the skid blocks.
- The FIA has recognized the need to address the proportionality of penalties for minor technical violations.
Stella emphasized that the disqualification did not stem from an intentional pursuit of performance. He stated that the team experienced an anomaly in car behavior, not a reckless chase for competitive advantage.
McLaren’s Position in the Championship
Following the disqualification, McLaren faces intensified competition from Max Verstappen in the drivers’ championship. Verstappen is now only 24 points behind the championship leader, with two rounds remaining in the season.
In recent races, Verstappen has secured victories in four out of the last seven Grand Prix events. In contrast, McLaren has managed to win only two races during the same timeframe.
