Frank Ragnow Fails Physical, Misses 2025 Season for Lions

Frank Ragnow, the Detroit Lions’ center, will not participate in the 2025 season due to a failed physical. The team’s medical staff discovered a Grade 3 hamstring strain, halting Ragnow’s comeback after his recent retirement.

Details of the Injury

Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Ragnow reported his injury to the team. This led to further medical evaluations, revealing a serious condition that eliminated his chances of returning to play this season.

Status of the Lions’ Offensive Line

Ragnow, 29, returned to the team in response to significant injuries on the offensive line. Left guard Christian Mahogany sustained a broken leg in Week 9, which has sidelined him until the new year. Additionally, center Graham Glasgow missed the Thanksgiving game due to a knee issue.

Alternatives in the Lineup

With Ragnow out, the Lions have made adjustments to their offensive line:

  • Kayode Awosika has stepped in for Mahogany at left guard.
  • Trystan Colon filled the center position for Glasgow.

Although Ragnow’s return could have strengthened the unit, the team will continue with its current lineup. Ragnow’s experience as a four-time Pro Bowler has been invaluable. He has allowed only four sacks in the past five seasons and earned a 90.0 Pro Football Focus grade three times.

Additional Options

Rookie Miles Frazier has recently been activated from the non-football injury list. Previously, he played primarily at right guard in college but has experience at left guard from the 2022 season. Frazier may receive an opportunity to contribute to the lineup.

Future Considerations for Ragnow

The possibility of Ragnow returning in 2026 remains open, although his earlier retirement was influenced by ongoing injuries. His sole complete season occurred in 2020. The latest injury may confirm his decision to retire.

Currently, Coach Campbell has not addressed the future of Ragnow, as confirmed by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. The Lions must rely on their available players to manage a challenging season ahead.
