Macaulay Culkin Plans ‘Home Alone’ Sequel Featuring Kevin McCallister’s Son

Macaulay Culkin has expressed interest in returning as Kevin McCallister in a potential “Home Alone” sequel during his recent tour, “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin.” He noted that any return would need to meet certain criteria and that he has a specific idea for the storyline.

Culkin’s Unique Sequel Concept

Culkin envisions his character, Kevin, as a single parent, either a widower or divorcee, raising a child. He described a scenario where he becomes preoccupied with work, inadvertently neglecting his child.

In this story, Kevin would find himself locked out of his house by his own son, who would set traps reminiscent of the original films. Culkin mentioned, “The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” indicating that the narrative would explore themes of familial connection and reconciliation.

Success of the Original Franchise

The “Home Alone” franchise launched Culkin into stardom in the 1990s, with the first film grossing $476 million worldwide. This made it the second-highest-grossing film of 1990.

  • Original Release: 1990 – “Home Alone”
  • Sequel: 1992 – “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”
  • Franchise Attempts:
    • 1997 – “Home Alone 3” (not featuring Culkin)
    • 2002 – TV release of a fourth film
    • 2021 – Disney+ reboot titled “Home Sweet Home Alone”

Culkin and Columbus’ Perspectives

Chris Columbus, the original director, has voiced strong skepticism about reviving the “Home Alone” series. In August, he stated that the magic of the original movie cannot be replicated and suggested that attempts to do so would be misguided.

Both Culkin and Columbus did not participate in “Home Alone 3,” which is often seen as a step away from the franchise’s essence.

While interest in a sequel remains, the potential for a new film hinges on capturing the spirit of the original while addressing Culkin’s evolving vision for Kevin McCallister’s character.
