Jon Sumrall Reportedly Joining SEC School from Florida, Auburn, Tulane
Jon Sumrall is set to become the head football coach at Florida, following reports confirming his appointment. The 43-year-old coach has an impressive track record, boasting a 42-11 overall record across four seasons. His tenure includes a notable 10-2 finish this season at Tulane.
Sumrall’s Coaching Achievements
Prior to his move to Florida, Sumrall achieved significant success at Troy, where he led the team to consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships in 2022 and 2023. His coaching prowess has caught the attention of multiple programs within the SEC.
Contract Details and Coaching Background
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sumrall is expected to earn approximately $7.5 million annually over a six-year contract. He is stepping into a Florida program that struggled last season, finishing with a disappointing 4-9 record. Billy Gonzales has been serving as the interim coach since the firing of Billy Napier on October 19.
Initially, Sumrall appeared to be headed to Auburn but became the preferred candidate for Florida after Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss opted for LSU. Sumrall’s experience includes playing as a linebacker for Kentucky and holding assistant coaching positions at both Kentucky and Ole Miss within the SEC.
Changes in the SEC Coaching Landscape
Sumrall’s hiring is part of a broader reshuffling within the SEC. Recent shifts include:
- Lane Kiffin potentially moving from Ole Miss to LSU
- Alex Golesh transitioning from South Florida to Auburn
- Ryan Silverfield leaving Memphis for Arkansas
With Kiffin’s presumed exit, Ole Miss is currently the only SEC program with a head coaching vacancy.
Tulane’s Upcoming Challenge
Before fully transitioning to Florida, it remains uncertain if Sumrall will lead Tulane in their upcoming American Conference championship game against North Texas this Friday. His decision will be closely watched as the momentum shifts within college football’s coaching carousel.
