Avian Flu Hits 4 Ontario Poultry Farms, 63,000 Birds Culled

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has reported four outbreaks of avian influenza in the Strathroy area of Ontario. This recent surge raises concerns about the health of local poultry and has resulted in significant culling of birds.

Details on the Avian Flu Outbreaks in Ontario

In the last two weeks, a total of 63,000 birds have been affected by the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The CFIA confirmed the latest outbreak on a commercial poultry farm on Friday. This farm is not far from earlier outbreaks reported within the same region.

Outbreak Timeline and Statistics

  • First outbreak: Approximately 15,600 turkeys affected.
  • Second outbreak: Around 32,000 turkeys culled.
  • Latest outbreak: Exact number of affected birds yet to be confirmed.
  • Total birds culled: At least 63,069.

To manage these outbreaks, the CFIA has established two primary control zones, PCZ-302 and PCZ-308. These zones encompass much of Strathroy-Caradoc and extend into parts of surrounding regions.

Impact on Local Poultry Industry

Representatives from the poultry industry stress that HPAI poses a health risk primarily to flocks, rather than consumers. Maggy Watson-Sparks, general manager of Feather Board Command Centre (FBCC), emphasized the importance of collaboration with the CFIA to manage the situation effectively.

Sources of the Outbreak

The CFIA noted that various factors might contribute to the presence of avian influenza, including the migratory patterns of wild birds. The dominant strain currently circulating, H5N1, is capable of spreading quickly within domestic flocks.

Biosecurity measures are critical to prevent the transmission of the virus from wild birds to domestic poultry. These measures include avoiding cross-contamination through appropriate hygiene practices.

Response from Major Poultry Processors

Strathroy-Caradoc hosts significant poultry processing firms, including Burnbrae Farms. According to a statement from the company, none of their egg suppliers are among those affected by the recent outbreaks. Communication from other local processors, such as Cuddy Farms, remains pending.

Historical Context

Ontario has experienced multiple avian influenza outbreaks in recent years, contributing to a collective toll on local poultry. Since early 2022, Canada has documented 615 outbreaks nationwide, impacting approximately 16.6 million birds.

As the situation progresses, the CFIA will continue to monitor and manage the avian influenza outbreaks to protect the health of poultry flocks throughout Ontario.
