The incident occurred about 16 kilometers east of Cranbrook, B.C., over the past weekend. According to CPKC spokesperson Patrick Waldron, track repairs were completed early Sunday morning, allowing rail traffic to resume after safety inspections.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

• The Regional District of East Kootenay issued an evacuation order for five nearby properties.
• A state of local emergency was declared but lifted on Saturday evening after assessments indicated no further risks.

Most of the derailed rail cars contained non-dangerous goods, although one propane tanker was leaking. Clean-up operations have focused on removing the derailed cars and addressing the propane leak effectively.

CPKC reported that the leak from the tanker car had been mitigated. Crews have repositioned the leaking tanker for safe offloading in the coming days, ensuring all necessary safety precautions are in place.

One of the impacted residents is Jamie Jones, who operates a nearly 400-hectare cattle farm near Wardner. She and her family were forced to evacuate after being informed of the propane leak. While they were given the option of temporary accommodations by the railway, they chose to stay in their vehicle nearby.
