Sir Michael Palin has openly criticized the National Health Service (NHS) for the treatment his late wife received during her final months. Helen Gibbons, who passed away at the age of 80 due to pneumonia and kidney failure in 2023, experienced a challenging hospital stay.

Palin described the hospital environment as “pretty awful” during Helen’s final weeks. He recounted that she entered the hospital with pneumonia about two months prior to her passing. The overwhelming pace of the staff left little room for personal attention.
Positive Experience in Hospice
Fortunately, following her hospital stay, Helen was transferred to a hospice where her experience improved significantly. Palin noted that she felt heard and valued during her time there, stating:
- “They listened to what she thought about life.”
- Those four weeks in hospice were “the happiest of her life.”
Michael Palin underscored the importance of individualized care, highlighting that healthcare appointments often rush patients through significant conversations.
Helen’s Life and Legacy
Helen Gibbons was a dedicated teacher and later became a bereavement counselor, helping others cope with loss. Palin reflected on her strength, especially in light of her three years of chronic leg pain. He acknowledged the toll it took on him to witness her suffering.
