Xcel Energy Empowers Communities with Electricity, Volunteering, and Development Grants
Xcel Energy is significantly impacting local communities through its volunteer efforts, economic development grants, and community support. The company’s employees demonstrate a strong commitment to service, particularly during the annual Day of Service and throughout the year.
Xcel Energy’s Community Engagement
Employees at the Xcel Energy Sioux Falls Service Center engage in various volunteer activities aimed at assisting local nonprofits. This commitment is especially evident during the annual Day of Service, which has become a tradition since its inception in 2010.
Annual Day of Service
- Over 1,200 volunteers participated in the 15th annual Day of Service.
- Approximately 3,500 hours of volunteer work contributed.
- More than $120,000 in economic impact for local nonprofits.
The Day of Service not only honors the victims and heroes of 9/11 but also fosters a spirit of community involvement. In 2025, volunteers beautified the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire by painting and landscaping.
Economic Development Grants
Xcel Energy has also awarded significant grants to support community projects:
- Carthage: Received $5,000 for a new storm safety siren.
- Ramona: Utilized $5,000 for ballpark improvements.
- Tea: Invested in a digital sign with a $5,000 grant.
- Monroe: Used $5,000 for lighting enhancements at the ball field.
Each of these grants has helped local communities develop essential resources and improve safety and recreational facilities.
Supporting Nonprofits and Families
Xcel Energy employees donate their time to support families in need. In April, volunteers packed food for 772 families and created boxes for an additional 200 families.
Additional Community Support Programs
Xcel Energy provides various initiatives to encourage community support, including:
- Gift Certificates: Offered in amounts from $20 to $500, perfect for any occasion and customizable with personal messages.
- HeatShare Program: In partnership with The Salvation Army, this initiative assists individuals struggling with heating costs during harsh winters.
