Wellingborough Caribbean Community Unites in Support of Jamaica
In response to the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, the Wellingborough Caribbean community has rallied together to support loved ones in Jamaica. The hurricane struck on October 28, 2023, hitting the island as a powerful category five storm. It caused extensive damage, resulting in at least 28 fatalities and devastating coastal towns.
Community Efforts to Aid Jamaica
Glenroy Bell, a representative from the Wellingborough African Caribbean Association (WACA), has been spearheading collection efforts. The group is gathering essential supplies through December 15. Bell expressed hope for increased contributions, especially toys for children, at the upcoming Caribbean Christmas Market. This event is slated to take place at the WACA center on Rock Street in Wellingborough.
Key Contributions and Ongoing Support
Bell emphasized the significance of raising awareness about Hurricane Melissa’s impact. He shared his personal connection to Jamaica, noting that some relatives in Wakefield are safe. However, he expressed sorrow over the widespread flooding and destruction.
- Essential Items Collected:
- Hygiene kits
- Tool kits
- Feminine hygiene products
- Solar lights
- Unperishable food items
Bell reported the successful collection of two large vehicles filled with supplies. Collaborative efforts with local churches have strengthened the campaign to provide aid. “We are trying to support the existing efforts. It’s going to take time, but we will continue,” he stated.
Coordinated Efforts Underway
Bishop Donnovan Allen, a senior pastor at the New Testament Church of God in Northampton, also highlighted the community’s response. His church has filled 80 boxes with goods, ready for shipment to a partnering church group in Jamaica. Allen noted, “We have been left overwhelmed,” reflecting on the generosity of local donors.
Donations have included tinned foods, sanitation supplies, and first aid items. Allen hopes to resume collections in January to sustain the momentum of support for those affected.
