Bay Area Braces for Coastal Floods as King Tides Approach

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for the Bay Area as a series of high tides, known as King Tides, approach. The National Weather Service (NWS) announced the advisory will take effect from 6 a.m. on Tuesday and last until 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Details of the Coastal Flood Advisory

This advisory applies particularly to low-lying areas along the San Francisco Bay shoreline and the North Bay interior valleys. The NWS forecasts minor flooding for lots, parks, and roads in these regions.

  • Advisory Dates: December 1, 2025, to December 6, 2025
  • Expected Flooding Areas: San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, Monterey Bay

Forecasted High Tides

San Francisco will experience tides approximately 1 foot above normal at the following times:

  • Tuesday: 8:24 a.m.
  • Wednesday: 9:04 a.m.
  • Thursday: 9:48 a.m.
  • Friday: 10:35 a.m.
  • Saturday: 11:25 a.m.
  • Sunday: 12:17 p.m.

The high tide times may vary by as much as 90 minutes along the Pacific Coast and within the Bay Area.

Understanding King Tides

Known as King Tides, these tides occur due to the alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth, resulting in higher water levels than usual. During storms or flooding events, these tides can lead to significantly increased water levels, posing risks to property and the coastal environment.

Beach Hazards in Effect

In addition to the coastal flood advisory, a beach hazard statement remains active from Sonoma to Monterey County. This warning is in place through Wednesday evening.

  • Expected Wave Heights: 10 to 14 feet
  • Hazards: Sneaker waves and rip currents

Coastal visitors are advised to exercise caution and keep away from rocks and jetties during this period. As the King Tides approach, public safety remains a top priority along the coastline.
