Fire Ravages Downtown Hilo Buildings

Early Saturday morning, a significant fire swept through Downtown Hilo, destroying four buildings. The fire ignited along Kinoʻole and Haili Streets, prompting an evacuation of local residents.

The Hawaiʻi County Fire Department reported no fatalities or injuries related to the fire. Christopher Olai Carvalho, the Assistant Chief of Operations, noted the flames rapidly spread through the structures. “Seven people were displaced from residences above businesses,” he stated.

Evacuations and Response

Approximately 80 individuals were evacuated from the nearby Cunningham building, which spans about 6,000 square feet. Firefighters are currently engaged in clean-up and debris removal, with assistance from the Department of Public Works.

Emergency shelters were established for those affected, with support from various nonprofit organizations. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Vibrant Hawaiʻi collaborated with local agencies to offer meals and temporary housing.

Community Resilience

Residents recounted their experiences. Ron Asuncion shared, “I was actually watching YouTube when my girlfriend smelled smoke. I initially dismissed it, but she heard people yelling about the fire.” He and others were relocated to Clem Akina Park for safety and support.

Later, evacuees were moved to the County’s Hoʻolulu Complex, where they received meals and access to showers. Transportation for displaced individuals was provided by the Mass Transit Agency.

Safety Precautions and Updates

As of Monday morning, the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense emphasized that the area near the incident remains hazardous, with sidewalks blocked for public safety. However, all streets in Downtown Hilo have since reopened.

Impact on Local Businesses

The destruction has left local businesses facing uncertainty. This fire incident follows another tragic event on Saturday at the Old Puueo Poi Factory, where two individuals lost their lives. In total, 28 residents were displaced from that fire.

Mayor Kimo Alameda expressed condolences for the lives lost during the weekend. He praised first responders for their dedication and thanked nonprofit partners for their assistance. “These incidents highlight our community’s strength and compassion,” he stated.

Ongoing Investigation

The causes of both fires remain unknown and are currently under investigation. The community remains on alert as responses continue to develop and aid is organized for those impacted.
