Robert Downey Jr. Reveals Gwyneth Paltrow’s Marvel Confusion, Forgets Co-Star Tom Holland

Robert Downey Jr. recently spoke about his Marvel co-star Gwyneth Paltrow’s difficulties recognizing characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This revelation came during The Hollywood Reporter’s 2025 Women in Entertainment gala, where Downey Jr. presented an award to Paltrow.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Marvel Confusion

During his speech, Downey Jr. described Paltrow as “impossibly intelligent” yet often bewildered by the complexities of the Marvel Universe. He recounted an amusing incident in which Paltrow inquired about an actor’s identity, asking, “Who’s that?” to which he replied, “No, his character’s name is Peter. That’s Tom Holland, you did four movies with him.”

Paltrow and Tom Holland

This isn’t an isolated incident regarding Paltrow’s confusion with her Marvel projects. Previously, she even claimed she did not appear in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” despite sharing scenes with both Downey Jr. and Holland in the film.

Count of Collaborations

In his comments, Downey Jr. mentioned that Paltrow and Holland had worked together on four films. However, officially, they have only collaborated in three released projects:

  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

This discrepancy raises questions: Was it a simple mistake, or could they have potentially collaborated on an upcoming project, such as “Avengers: Doomsday”? Paltrow’s character, Pepper Potts, has not appeared since “Avengers: Endgame.”

Future in the MCU

Interestingly, she had been thought to have semi-retired from acting. However, her recent announcements regarding participation in a film featuring Timothée Chalamet suggest she might not be done with acting just yet. With rumors about Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom, a reunion between Downey Jr. and Paltrow in the MCU could be plausible.

Such a reunion would certainly be captivating, but someone may need to remind Paltrow who Doctor Doom is. It seems that even in the Marvel universe, the most brilliant minds can occasionally get lost among the characters.
